  "Painting from the Heart" with Artist Carol Carter, AWA, HACS. Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN 46260. Oct. 21 to Oct. 23, 2026. 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day. Break for lunch.

  3-day Workshop Price: $375 for WSI Members. $435 for Non-Members. Skill Level: All experience levels welcome.

  Discover how to paint with freedom, emotion, and flow in watercolor. In this inspiring workshop, Carol shares her signature wet-into-wet, loose watercolor technique through engaging 20 to 30-minute demonstrations designed to spark creativity.

  Participants will paint alongside as she offers personalized guidance and support. You’ll experiment with new techniques while refining essential skills such as brush handling, water control, composition, and value. She will demonstrate the “cell” technique of sophisticating a wash.

  Throughout each session, Carol will highlight the brilliance of color, the purity of transparent paint, and the importance of imagery, content, and point of view. By the end of every class, you’ll complete a finished painting that reflects both technique and personal growth.

  GEAR:

  Palette, Mechanical Pencil, Paper Towels, Water Buckets (2), Facial Mister (fine spray bottle), iPad or cell phone to photograph the various stages of DEMO.

  Carol Carter is an internationally recognized artist whose career has spanned more than 35 years. Carol has taught workshops for over 30 years, as well as in university. Her paintings have been in many national and international exhibitions, both juried and invitational. She has been featured in global publications including, International Arts Magazine, Art of Watercolour, Watercolor Artist, and L’Aquarelle Magazine. In 2012 she was an AIRE fellow for the Everglades National Park. She is part of the Art in Embassies program with art currently in the American Embassy in Montenegro.

  In 2019 she was also honored with Master Signature Member status, American Women Artists and Master Signature Member status, Heartland Art Club.  She recently exhibited in “Making Their Mark: American Women Artists” at the Booth Western Art Museum. She is the recent recipient of 2020 Snehil Lifetime Achievement Award, Snehilsrijan, India. She has exhibited her work in Europe, China, Hong Kong, USVI, Morocco and throughout the United States. She has lead many symposiums on how to make a living as an artist and marketing art as a career. She has frequently served as a juror in art exhibitions both on national and on international levels. She is on the advisory board of the American Watercolor Weekly.

  "Autumn Leaves Reimagined: as shape, negative space and color." with WSI Signature Member MarySue Veerkamp-Schwab. 

  Saturday, Nov. 14 from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm. at The Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artists Drive, Nashville, IN 47448.

  Welcome autumn in this one-day workshop inspired by the varied shapes and colors of fall leaves. Using leaves as both subject and design element, we will move beyond representational painting to create abstract compositions that explore shape, negative space, and transparent glazing,  transforming familiar leaf forms into dynamic compositions.

  Demonstrations will introduce the techniques and concepts, followed by time to develop your own painting with individualized instruction and guidance. You’ll be encouraged to experiment, make thoughtful artistic choices, and discover new possibilities through transparency, layering, color, and abstraction.

  Come explore the beauty of fall leaves in a fresh way—and discover what can emerge when watercolor, drawing, and abstraction come together.

  Adult class. Must have some watercolor experience. $45 per person. Supplies not included, see below. You do not need to be a member of The Watercolor Society to attend! Space is limited.   Supply List for this workshop:

  The following list is based on my MarySue’s painting approach, and are SUGGESTIONS, not requirements. Students are welcome to incorporate their own material preferences.

  
  

  PAPER: WSI will provide each student with 2 sheets of Arches 140 lb. watercolor paper 9" x 12". You do not need to buy any watercolor paper for this class unless you want more or a larger size. WSI will also provide smaller pieces for testing colors.

  
  

  PAINTS: MarySue recommends a limited palette, 10 Windsor Newton Professional grade colors: 6 warm colors: Windsor Red, Windsor Yellow, Burnt Siena, and Raw Siena, Permanent Rose and Windsor Violet. 4 cool colors: Windsor Blue Green Shade, Windsor Blue Red Shade, Hookers Green, and Paynes Grey. Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bleed Proof White Fine art Paint, or similar Opaque white.

   

  A sturdy board to tape down paper so it does not buckle, WSI has a few for sale. Contact us for details.

   

  OTHER ITEMS: pencils, hard lead 2H or 4H, sharpener and kneaded eraser. Paper Towels, clear or white watercolor tape (no colored tapes) Ruler, Palette and mixing pans, 2 small cups for clean water. Small containers to mix colors, with lids.

   

  BRUSHES: Do not spend a fortune on brushes. Windsor Newton has an inexpensive line. Sizes: 2” and 1½” flat; #4 and #2 round. Toothbrush for splattering. MarySue’s favorite brush: Silver Black Velvet Oval ¾”.

   

  Supplies can be ordered from several art suppliers including Blick Art. If you have a hard time finding any of the above, please let us know.

  
  

  SNACKS/LUNCH: Please pack food and drinks for yourself. BCAG has a small kitchenette with a sink, refrigerator, and microwave. You are welcome to also bring snacks to share. Thank you!
